Branchage!
The show I saw tonight was part of the Branchage Jersey International Film Festival, which has been running over here for three days.
The word ‘branchage’ is taken from the locally in-famous trimming of hedges tradition we have twice a year…
On the Visite du Branchage the Connétable, assisted by the members of the Roads Committee and the Centeniers, visit the roads of his parish to ensure that the branchage has been completed. Hedges, branches and overhanging trees must be trimmed back so as to give a clearance of 12 feet over main roads and 8 feet over footpaths and all trimmings removed from the road. “Occupiers of land may be fined up to £50 for each infraction” (….my dad got fined £1.50 one year, for fushia bush overhanging our wall!)
Anyway, that has nothing to do with the film festival which screens new and classic cinema alongside cross arts music and filmwork, from local and international film makers. My uncle showed his film about the German bunkers and remnants of the Occupation of Jersey.
The films are shown in unconventional venues, housing events related to their surroundings. It’s a shame, because Man of Aran was to be shown on Elizabeth Castle in St Aubin’s Bay, but the timing meant that we would’ve been cut off by the tide before the screening was over ….so it was shown in the old Opera House instead, where at least we had a great sound.
I wanted to get tickets for the closing night gala showing of ‘Moon’ directed by Duncan Jones (aka Zowie Bowie) who was to be there to introduce it, but the tickets sold out in a flash :(
Still, at least I had a great time for the rest of the weekend!
Great clip from Man of Aran of the young boy fishing off the high cliffs.

A clip from the end of the film
British Sea Power - Man of Aran
Went to see British Sea Power tonight, who performed their soundtrack to the 1934 film Man of Aran …absolutely loved it!
The band reminded me of Mogwai (who I’m a fan of) and their music went so well with the film.
Was in the perfect mood for it too ….I could’ve sat & listened to that sort of music all day, while watching the film showing the hardships of life ….it puts you in a weird place
Race Update
We have two race horses staying with us for the weekend. They have come over from a yard in Bath to get some experience and take part in the local racing meet tomorrow. Although they are used to travelling in the box, both horses have coped amazingly well with the 2 hour drive and 4 hour ferry trip accross to Jersey. I think they’ve settled in fine after a shower down, a good roll in the stable and plently of hay.
….wishing them the best of luck in their races tomorrow, but I’m glad our horse is not up against them (Fine The World will be in her first hurdle tomorrow, she’s been jumping well so we hope she shows everyone what she can do)
WhooHoo! ...something to look forward to next weekend
